Edwin (Edmund) Coleman
1809-1861
Edmund was born on the 9th June 1809 in Newbury he was baptised on the 2nd July 1809 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the son of James and Sarah Coleman (nee Morris) who were married on the 12th September 1805 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (both were single).
In 1815 Edmund (5) was living with his parents James (44) and Sarah (30) and his sisters Charlotte (3) and Caroline (an infant), on the west side of Newtown Lane Newbury.
In the 1830 Pigot’s Directory Edmund’s father was recorded as the Innkeeper at the Nags Head Bartholomew Street Newbury he was also recorded in the Robson’s Directory in 1839.
Edmund married Sarah Samuels on the 23rd July 1835 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. (Sarah was born c1808 the daughter of William and Mary Samuels (nee Challis who were married on the 18th June 1808 at St Nicolas Church Newbury)
The 1839 Robson’s Directory records Edmund as a Shopkeeper in Bartholomew Street Newbury
Edmund’s wife Sarah died aged 32 in 1840 she was buried on the 20th July at St Nicolas Newbury
The 1841 census records Edmund (30) living with his parents James (60), an Innkeeper, and Sarah (55), and his sister Caroline (25) in Bartholomew Street Newbury.
Edmund’s father died aged 63 in 1842 he was buried on the 22nd August at St Nicolas Newbury
His mother died aged 66 in 1849 she was buried on the 27th April at St Nicolas Newbury
Edmund remarried in 1850 his 2nd wife was Hannah Van Wyck they married on the 26th December at St George Camberwell Southwark (Edmund’s name has been mistakenly transcribed as Edward Colman on ancestry) he was recorded as a Carpenter.
The 1851 census records Edmund (41) as a Carpenter living in Bartholomew Street Newbury with his wife Hannah (36), born in Newington Surrey.
The 1861 census records Edmund (53) as a Carpenter Journeyman, living in the City Newbury with his wife Ellen (50) born London Middlesex (no death found for Hannah Coleman and no married to Ellen found yet!)
Edmund died aged 51 in 1861 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 31st May (death registration records him as Edward, NRC records him as Edwin)
