Mary Cox

c1840-1861

Mary was born in Newbury the daughter of Thomas and Mary Cox (nee Kimber) who were married in Speen in 1838.

Mary’s father: Thomas was a Baker, he was baptised on the 26th June 1814 in Silchester Hampshire the son of Aaron and Sarah Cox (nee Hill) who were married on the 14th April 1803 at St Mary and St John Newtown Hampshire.

Mary’s mother: Mary was baptised on the 28th February 1813 in Speen Berkshire the daughter of William and Henrietta Kimber (nee Dean) who were married on the 3rd August 1808 in Heston Hounslow Middlesex.

Thomas and Mary also had the following children (all born in Newbury):

The family lived in Newbury, Northbrook Street (1841), Toovey’s Yard (1851) and Parr’s Yard (1861)

Mary died aged 20 in 1861 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17th May.

Mary’s father died aged 49 in 1863 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9th May

Mary’s mother remarried in 1866 in Kensington her 2nd husband was William Toovey. William died aged 47 on the 15th January 1871 he was buried on the 21st January at St Mary’s Greenham.

The 1871 census records Mary Toovey (54) as an Annuitant, living at 12 Alton Place Newbury. Her daughter Lydia Cox (16), a Milliner’s Apprentice, son Harry Cox (18), a Coach Maker’s Apprentice and her nephew George Kimber (20), a Herdsman, were also recorded living with her.

Mary Toovey died aged 67 in 1880 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th October.
