William Appleton



William was a Sawyer he was born in either Woodhay Hampshire (as recorded in the 1861 census) or Newbury Berkshire (as recorded in the 1851 census).

He married Elizabeth Lambden/Lambdin on the 19th September 1814 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. (Elizabeth was born c1787 in Newbury the daughter of Timothy and Sarah Lamden).

William and Elizabeth had the following children:

Thomas baptised 15th January 1815

 William baptised 16th November 1817

 Twins: Mary and Martha baptised 29th December 1819

Charles baptised 3rd August 1823

Elizabeth born c1838

The 1815 census of Newbury records William (25), Elizabeth (27) and their son Thomas (an infant) living in Be Yard on the east side of Bartholomew Street Newbury also recorded in the household were Thomas Appleton (70) (possibly William’s father), William Lambdin (31), a Tailor, Thomas Lambdin (26) (possibly Elizabeth’s brothers) and Sarah Arrowsmith (50).

The 1841 census records William (45), Elizabeth (45) and their children William (20), Charles (15), both Sawyers, Martha (20) and Elizabeth (3), living in the City Newbury. 

In 1851 William (63), Elizabeth (63), their children, Martha (32), Charles (25) and Elizabeth (13) and their widowed son William Appleton (34), his children Matilda (7) and Elizabeth (5) and their granddaughter Sarah (8), (illegitimate daughter of Martha) were recorded living in Bartholomew Street Newbury.

 By 1861 William and Elizabeth (both aged 72) were back living in the City, also recorded in the household were their two granddaughters Sarah (17) and Elizabeth (15) and their great granddaughter Mary A (2 months, (Sarah’s illegitimate daughter)).

William died aged 75 in 1865 he was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st June

Elizabeth died aged 80 in 1868 she was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th June.
