Harriet Jordan

1816-1867

Harriet’s parents, siblings and early family life:

Harriet’s parents were Edward and Hannah Wilder (nee Carver) who were married on the 2^nd March 1815 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

Her mother was born in Berkshire she was baptised on the 25^th December 1780 in Kintbury Berkshire the daughter of Benjamin and Sarah Carver (nee Church) who were married on the 16^th October 1780 in Inkpen Berkshire. Hannah died aged 76 in 1855 she was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25^th June.

Her father was born c1776 in Wallingford Berkshire. He was a widower when he married Harriet’s mother. (1^st wife Phoebe Brundson (nee Field) died aged 32 in 1814 they had one child, Phoebe born c1809). Edward died aged 85 in 1861 he was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 20^th November.

In 1815 Edward (40), Hannah (34) and Phoebe (6) were living at the Coach and Horses (on the west side of Cheap Street) Newbury (Edward was the Publican).

Edward and Hannah had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury:

Harriet baptised 26^th June 1816 (father recorded as a Publican)

Twins, Charles and James baptised 31^st January 1818 (father recorded as a Publican)

Joseph baptised 17^th February 1819 (father recorded as a Publican)

William baptised 19^th August 1821 (father recorded as a Labourer)

Eliza baptised 8^th April 1823 (father recorded as a Labourer)

Harriet:

In c1837 Harriet gave birth to a son Henry Thomas Wilder he was baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury on the 22^nd October 1837

In the 1841 census Harriet (20) and her son Henry (3) were living in West Mills Newbury with her father Edward (60), a Police Constable and her mother Hannah (60).

In c1843 Harriet gave birth to a daughter, Caroline Wilder (birth registered in the March Q in Newbury).

In 1851 Harriet (33), a House Servant and Caroline (8) were recorded living in Chapel Yard Newbury with a Butcher, William Jordan (32). Her son Henry (14) was living his grandmother Hannah (72) in Factory Yard Newbury.

In 1861 William (43), a Butcher and Harriet (43) were living in Baldings Buildings Newbury.

Harriet died aged 50 in 1867 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27^th November.

After Harriet’s death:

In the 1871 census William (53) was recorded as a Butcher living alone in Independent Chapel Yard Newbury he died aged 53 later that year and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road cemetery on the 31^st July 1871.

Harriet’s son:

Henry Thomas Wilder married Louisa Purdue in 1856 (marriage registered in Newbury) they had the following children: Louisa 1857, Harry Grove c1859, Emma 1860, Bill 1861, Amy c1863 (died aged 2 in 1864) and Bessy c1867. Henry was a Bricklayer he became a Foreman and was involved in the building and restoration of many churches. The family lived in Jack of Newbury Street in 1861, Caroline Place in 1871 and Northcroft Lane Newbury in 1881. Louisa died aged 60 in 1889. In 1891 Henry was living in Berkeley Terrace Newbury. He remarried on the 9^th November 1895 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. His 2^nd wife was Mary Sawyer (nee Head, widow of Charles Sawyer). In 1901 Henry and Mary were living in Berkeley Terrace Newbury. The 1911 census records them living at 11 Kimbers Almshouses Cheap Street Newbury. Henry died aged 73 in 1911 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10^th May.

Harriet’s daughter:

The 1861 census records Caroline as Caroline Jordan (18), lodging in Simmons Yard Newbury, she was recorded as a Servant (out of work). She married (as Caroline Jordan Wilder) John Gore in 1865 (marriage registered in Newbury). John was born c1844 in Greenham. Caroline Gore died aged 23 in 1868 she was buried on the 17^th March at St Mary Greenham
