Henry Warner

1818-1889

Henry Warner was born on the 27^th November 1818 in Newbury he was baptised on the 25^th December 1818 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Warner (nee Batchelor) who were married on the 15^th April 1818 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Thomas was recorded as a Sawyer on Henry’s baptism record.

Henry’s parents and early life:

Henry’s father Thomas was baptised on the 26^th June 1791 at the parish church of St Andrew Ogbourne Marlborough Wiltshire the son of John and Phebe Warner (nee Painter) who were married on the 27th April 1789 at St Mary Marlborough Wiltshire (John was from the parish of St Andrew Ogbourne Marlborough).

His mother Elizabeth was baptised on the 3^rd June 1787 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the daughter of William and Hannah Batchelor (nee Hedges) who were married on the 27^th January 1781 at St Nicolas Newbury

In 1815 (before they married) Elizabeth Batchelor (32) and Thomas Warner (24), a Labourer, were living in Greenham Lane Newbury  with Elizabeth’s widowed father  William Batchelor (56), a Boat Builder, her widowed brother William (32), and her nephew William Batchelor (7) (son of her brother William and his wife Charlotte (nee Field) who died aged 25 in 1813).

 Henry’s father Thomas died aged 33 in 1824 he was buried on the 30^th June at St Nicolas Newbury

In 1841 Henry (20), a Cordwainer, was recorded living in Northcroft Lane Newbury with his mother Elizabeth (50), a Tailoress, James Batchelor (55) a Boat Builder and Sarah Friden (60).

The 1851 census records Elizabeth (64) (surname recorded as Harner on ancestry) as a Laundress, living in Northcroft Lane Newbury. Also recorded in the household were two lodgers, James Batchelor (66), a Barge Builder and Samuel Powers (27) a Labourer Coal Heaver.

Henry’s mother Elizabeth died aged 67 in 1855 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8^th September

Henry in later life:

Henry married Hannah Foster (born c 1809 in Newbury the daughter of James and Frances Foster (nee Chubb)) on the 9^th October 1842 at St Mary (The Minster) Reading Berkshire. (Both were single and living in Howard Street, Henry was a Shoemaker and Hannah a Servant), they had the following children:

Sarah 1843, Matilda 1845, William 1846, Thomas Henry 1848 and Elizabeth 1851

The 1851 census records the family living in the Rose and Thistle Yard, Northcroft Lane Newbury. Henry was recorded as a Master Boot and Shoemaker.

The 1861, 1871 and 1881 census records all record Henry and Hannah living in Northcroft Lane Newbury. I n 1861 Henry was recorded as a Boot Maker, in 1871 and 1881 he was recorded as a Labourer.

On the 19^th September 1867 tragedy struck the family. Henry and Hannah’s son William (20) was killed in a terrible accident whilst working in a sandpit in Wash Common, he died of suffocation after being buried alive. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25^th September.

Henry and Hannah both died in 1889, Hannah died aged 79 on the 16^th February she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21^st February. Henry died aged 70 on the 24^th February he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2^nd March
