Mary Ann Smith

c1817-1892

Mary Ann Stagg was born in East Woodhay Hampshire the daughter of George and Ann Stagg (nee Dicks) who were married on the 29^th June 1812 in East Woodhay.

Her father George was an Agricultural Labourer he was born c 1780 in East Garston Berkshire. (Possible baptism 14^th October 1781 East Garston parents William and Jane Stagg).

Her mother Ann was born c1789 in Great Bedwyn Wiltshire. (Possible baptism 13^th December 1789 Great Bedwyn parents Jonathan and Mary Dix)

George and Ann had at least two other children, James born c1821 and Maria born c1828

Mary Ann married Jacob Harris in 1848 (marriage registered in Kingsclere). (Jacob was born in Hampshire he was baptised on the 23^rd June 1816 in Faccombe the son of William and Hannah Harris)

In the 1851 census Mary Ann and Jacob were recorded living in Bartholomew Street Newbury, Jacob was recorded as a Greengrocer. They were still living in Bartholomew Street in 1861. Jacob was recorded in this census as a Grocer.

Jacob died aged 47 on the 11^th October 1862 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14^th October.

Mary Ann remarried in 1863 in Newbury her 2^nd husband was Elijah Smith, a widower. (1^st wife Ann Newbury (married in 1837 in Speen) she died in 1862).

Elijah and Mary continued in the grocery business, both the 1871 and 1881 census records record them living at 112 Bartholomew Street Newbury.

Elijah died aged 86 on the 6^th March 1890 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11^th March.

Alter her husband’s death Mary Ann (74) continued trading as a Greengrocer at 112 Bartholomew Street Newbury. She died aged 75 on the 24^th April 1892 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27^th April.
