William Lynch

c1822-1899

 

William Lynch was born in Newbury he was baptised on the 10th March 1822 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the illegitimate son of Maria Paice Lynch and Thomas Gough (a Porter).

Maria also had three other illegitimate children with Thomas Gough. She married (as Maira Paice) Edward Golding in 1825. (Maria was born Maria Paice c1792 the daughter of James and Elizabeth Paice. By 1807 her mother Elizabeth was in a relationship with John Lynch and Maria was then known as Maria Lynch).

In 1841 William Linch (15) was working as a Shoemaker’s Apprentice, living in Old Newtown Road Newbury with his brothers Robert Linch (20) and Thomas Linch (15), both Labourers, his step-father Edward Golding (40), a Shoemaker, his mother Maria Golding (40), and his half-siblings Mary Ann Golding (12) and George Golding (10).

William married Sarah Ann Winter (born c1823 in Reading Berkshire) in 1841

William and Sarah had the following children (all births registered in Newbury):

William was recorded as a Shoemaker/Cordwainer in the census records 1841-1891 apart from the 1881 census which records him as a Bricklayer’s Labourer.

The 1851, 1881 and 1891 census records record the family living in Old Newtown Road Newbury, The 1871 census records them living in Old Road and the 1861 census records them living in Bartholomew Street Newbury.

Sarah Ann died aged 73 on the 22nd June 1898 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th June.

William died (age at death recorded as 74) on the 20th December 1899 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd December.

The Memorial Inscription for William and Sarah Ann also records a son ----Edward Lynch 30 years died in 1916. This was not their son but their grandson Henry Edward Lynch born in 1886 who was the son of their son Henry Edward Lynch born in 1862.
