Joseph Smith

Joseph was born in Wantage Berkshire. (Possible baptism 28th November 1792 Wantage Berkshire son of William and Ann Smith, possible marriage for parents William Smith and Ann Cox 26th December 1789 Wantage)
Joseph was a Shoemaker/Cordwainer he married three times.
His 1st wife was Martha Maskell, they were married on the 27th December 1818 at St Nicolas Church Newbury and they had a daughter Martha who was baptised 27th November 1819. His wife died aged 26 she was buried on the 30th November 1819 at St Nicolas Newbury.
His 2nd wife was Charlotte Hine they were married on the 25th December 1820 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Charlotte died aged 35 and was buried on the 22nd Jan 1823 at St Nicolas Newbury
His 3rd wife was a widow, Jane Hooper (nee Skinner) they were married on the 9th August 1824 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.
Joseph and Jane had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury:
Margaret baptised 16th January 1825
Joseph baptised 17th December 1826 (died aged 7+ buried 7th May 1834 at St Nicolas Newbury)
William baptised 8th February 1829
John baptised 17th October 1830 (died aged 2 buried 11th January 1833 at St Nicolas Newbury)
Sarah baptised 2nd September 1832 (died aged 10 months buried 11th June 1833 at St Nicolas Newbury)
Charles baptised 18th May 1834 (died aged 3 buried 16th March 1837 at St Nicolas Newbury)
George baptised 28th November 1836 (Abode recorded as Union Workhouse)
The 1841 census records Joseph (45), as a Shoemaker, Jane (45), a Shoe Binder, Will (10)) and Geo (3), in the Newbury Workhouse.
The 1851 census records Joseph (59) as a Cordwainer living in Bartholomew Street Newbury with Jane (55) and their son George (15).
Jane died aged 63 in 1859 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th November.
The 1861 census records Joseph (69) (recorded as J Smith) as a Pauper Inmate in the Newbury Workhouse
He died aged 73 in 1861 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 22nd May.
