Gordon Reid

1872-1938

 

Gordon was born in Newbury the son of George and Hannah Reid (nee Lloyd) who were married in Westminster Middlesex on the 29th November 1856.

His father George was born c1825 in Kirkcudbright Scotland and was a Draper. He died aged 84 on the 20th July 1909 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th July.

His mother Hannah was born c1829 in Newbury Berkshire she died aged 61 on the 18th December 1890 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd December.

Gordon had six brothers, William born 1859, George born 1860, James born 1862, died aged 13th months in 1863, Thomas born 1867, died aged 14 months in 1868, Walter born 1868, died aged 3 weeks in 1868, Lloyd born 1870, and four sisters, Jane born 1858, Margaret born 1863, Catherine born 1864 and Ellen born c1866.

Gordon (8) was recorded living with her parents and siblings in Cheap Street Newbury in 1881.

The 1891 census records him aged 18, as a Grocer’s Assistant working for a Mr Fred E Stroud in the High Street Bruton Somerset.

He married in 1897.

The 1901 census records Gordon (28) as a Grocer’s Assistant living at 39 Cranmer Road Croydon Surrey with Edith (33) (born St Germans Cornwall) and their son Howard (5), (born Hackney)

The 1911 census records Gordon (39) as a married man, occupation, Commission Agent living with his sisters, Catherine (46) and Ellen (45) at 48 Cheap Street Newbury his son Howard (14) was also recorded in the household.

He died aged 65 on the 2nd May 1938 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery in the 6th May. His sister Catherine was laid to rest with him in 1846.
