Ellen Wernham

c1797-1877

According to the 1851 census Eleanor Wells (aka Ellen) was born in Streatley Berkshire. She married Jeremiah Wernham (surname recorded as Wirnam on Hardwicke Marriage Index) on the 3rd October 1821 at St Mary’s Church Hampstead Norris /Norreys. Jeremiah was an Agricultural Labourer.

 Jeremiah & Ellen had the following children (and possibly more):

Rodi c1840 (aka Rhoda)

Eliza Maria 1843

 

The family moved to Newbury in approximately 1837. They were recorded living in Bartholomew Street in the 1841 census.

Jeremiah died aged 43 in 1847 he was buried on the 23rd May at St Mary the Virgin Speen.

In 1851 Ellen (52) (recorded as Alen Whernham on ancestry) and her younger children, Alfred (20), Edwin (16), Jesse (14), Rhoda (11) and Eliza (7) were recorded living in Dredge’s Yard Newbury.

In the 1871 census Ellen was recorded as being blind, she was living in Rose & Thistle Yard Newbury with her married daughter Rhoda Parker and her family. She died aged 80 on the 17th January 1877 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 20th January.
