Willie Smith

1862-1929

Willie was born in Speen Berkshire the son of George and Mary Ann Smith (nee Palmer) who were married on the 25^th December 1858 in Speenhamland Berkshire.

His father was born in Stockcross Berkshire in 1838 the son of Mark and Eliza Smith (nee) Watts. His mother was born in Speen in 1839 the daughter of Moses and Harriet Palmer (nee Mile).

Willie’s siblings were: Mary Ann born c1859, Clara Elizabeth born c1866, George born c1868, Isaac born 1870, Richard born c1873 and Edward born c1877. (All born in Speen apart from Richard who was born in Shaw)

Willie was recorded living in Speenhamland with his parents and siblings in 1871.

He doesn’t seem to be recorded in the 1881 or the 1901 census records. The 1891 census records him aged 29, a Steam Engine Maker (Fitter), living at 15 Goswell Row Speenhamland with his parents and brothers, Isaac and Edward. The 1911 census records him as Willie (45), a Traction Engine Driver, lodging in Donnington Newbury with a Hannah Goddard (72) and Edward Goddard (41).

His father died aged 75 on the 11^th March 1915 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13^th March. (Abode at time of death: 12 Church Almshouses Newbury)

His mother died aged 81 on the 30^th December 1920 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1^st January 1921 with his father. (Abode at time of death: 5 Trafalgar Place Newbury)

Willie died aged 67 on the 15^th October 1929 he was buried with his parents on the 19^th October. (Abode at time of death: 5 Trafalgar Place Newbury)
