Thomas Smart

c1822-1895

 

Thomas was born in Berkshire he was baptised on the 7th April 1822 at St Mary Kintbury the son of Samuel and Harriet Smart (nee Thomas) who were married on the 26th January 1813 in Kintbury .

Thomas’s parents:

Samuel was born c1792 in Kintbury and was an Agricultural Labourer. Harriet was born c1780 in Wickham Berkshire.

Samuel and Harriet also had the following children (all baptised in Kintbury):

John baptised 20th February 1814

Harriet baptised 17th March 1816

Mary baptised 28th December 1817

Caroline baptised 30th July 1820

Charles baptised 28th March 1824

When Harriet married Samuel she was a widow, (married as Harriet Cook) her 1st husband was Thomas Cook, they were married in 1799 at Welford and Wickham. They has two daughters, Lucy, baptised 10th October 1802 and Nancy, baptised 21st April 1805, both girls were baptised in Wickham. Thomas Cook died aged 29 in 1807 he was buried on the 9th December at St Nicolas Newbury.

Harriet died aged 67 in 1846 she was buried on the 1st January 1847 at Kintbury St Mary.

Samuel remarried the following year his 2nd wife was Hannah Eatwell (nee Bates). Samuel died aged 78 in 1870 he was buried on the 11th April at Kintbury St Mary. Hannah died aged 84 in 1882 she was buried on the 19th December, also in Kintbury.

Thomas:

In 1841 Thomas was living with his parents in Gravel Pits Kintbury

He married Eliza Lawrence (nee Jacobs) on the 11th November 1848 at the parish church of St Mary Kintbury. Eliza was a widow and had three children, John born c1837, Ann born 1839 and Thomas born 1845. Eliza’s 1st husband was William Lawrence, (born c1795, died in 1848, buried on the 16th January in Kintbury.)

Thomas and Eliza had two daughters, Louisa born 1858 and Sarah Jane born 1860. Sarah Jane died aged 10 months in 1861 she was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th February.

The family were recorded living in Kintbury (1851), Bartholomew Street Newbury (1861), St John’s View (1871 and 1881) and New Church Almshouses Newtown Road (1891).

Thomas worked as both an Agricultural Labourer and a General Labourer he died aged 78 on the30th December 1895 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st January 1896. (Memorial records him as T Smart (year of death mistakenly recorded as 1896 should be 1895) also recorded on the MI is Ann Few (Ann was his step-daughter, Ann Lawrence born 1839, married Henry Few in 1862))

The 1901 census records Eliza (84) living at 6 New Church Almshouses Newtown Road Newbury, she died aged 87 in 1904 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14th April.
