John Mason

c1802-1852

 

John Masum was born in Wiltshire he was baptised on the 17th October 1802 in Great Bedwyn the son of John and Jane Masum (nee Mear) who were married on the 18th August 1799 in Great Bedwyn . John and Jane also two other children baptised in Great Bedwyn, Amy Masum 31/8/1800 and Charles Masum 13/1/1805.

John Mason married Mary Kimber (born c1802 in Overton Hampshire) on the 26th May 1831 in Overton Wiltshire and at the time of their marriage John was recorded as being from Whitchurch Hampshire.

John and Mary had the following children:

John Alford Masom born c1832 Clatford Hampshire baptised 12th August 1832 in Upper Clatford

Edward Mason born c1835 in Whitchurch Hampshire baptised 18th January 1835 in Whitchurch

Jane born c1837 in Newbury

Henry Masom born c1838 in Clatford Hampshire baptised 4th November 1838 in Upper Clatford

Tom Mason born in 1843 in Newbury

In 1841 the Mason family (family name recorded as Wason on ancestry) were recorded living in Northbrook Street Newbury, John was recorded as a Postman.

The 1851 census records John Maton (48), as a Post Office Messenger, living in Parr’s Yard Newbury with Mary (48) and their children, John (18), a Post Office Messenger, Edward (16), an Errand Boy, Jane (14), Henry (12), an Errand Boy and Tom (7)

John died aged 49 on the 26th August 1852 (surname recorded as Masson on freebmd) he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th August (surname recorded as Mason in burial accounts and Massom on Memorial Inscription)

In 1861 Mary (63) was living in Simmons Yard Newbury with her sons, Henry (22) and Tom (17). (family surname recorded as Massone on ancestry)

Mary Massom died aged 78 in 1875 in the Workhouse she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 22nd March.
