George Smith

George was born in Newbury he was the son of George and Elizabeth Smith (nee Watts) who were married on the 13th January 1800 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.
In 1815 George (14) was living at Hamans Buildings Greenham Lane Newbury with his parents George (40), occupation; Boat Builder and Elizabeth (38) and his siblings, George Israel (12), George Ezer (Azor) (9), Maria (7), Thomas (5) and John (1).
George’s mother Elizabeth died (age recorded at death 37) in 1818 she was buried on the 16th May at St Nicolas Newbury. His father died (age recorded at death 57) in 1832 he was buried on the 1st August at St Nicolas Newbury.
George married Ann Batt (a widow, nee Farr, 1st marriage to William Batt in1812 in Hambledon Hampshire) on the 25th December 1826 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.
George and Ann had the following children:

On George’s baptism record in 1828, George was recorded as a Shopkeeper of West Mills Newbury.
On Edwin’s baptism record in 1830 and on all census records George was recorded as a Boat Builder.
The family were recorded living in Newbury, Rg Market (1841), Hobb’s Yard Northbrook Street (1851) and Webb’s Yard Northbrook Street (1861).
Ann died aged 72 in 1862 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th September.
In the 1871 census George was recorded living in King John’s Almshouses Newbury, he died aged 72 in 1872 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st October.
