Elizabeth Cooper

Elizabeth Geliff/Jelliff was born in Newbury the daughter of George and Jane Geliff (nee Shuttle) who were married on the 23rd November 1817 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (both were single and George was from Enborne)
Elizabeth’s father George died aged 48 in 1833 he was buried on the 1st July at St Nicolas Newbury.
In 1851 Elizabeth Geliffe (27) was working as a Laundress, living in Trafalgar Place, Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with her mother Jane (58), a Pauper.
Elizabeth’s mother Jane died aged 65 in 1857 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th April.
Elizabeth Jelliff married Charles Cooper in 1853 in Newbury. Charles was born c1821 in Kingsclere and was a Mealman/Miller)
Charles and Elizabeth had the following children (all born in Newbury):
Martha Ann 1855-1898, George John 1857-1923, William c1859, Walter 1861-1884, Rhoda Elizabeth 1863-1882, Henry Charles 1865-1879 and Kate 1868
The family were recorded living in Cheap Street Newbury in 1861 and Market Place Newbury in 1871.
Elizabeth became a widow in 1876. Charles died aged 55 on the 12th December he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16th December.
By 1876 Elizabeth was living at 6 Shaw Crescent Newbury.
Elizabeth’s son Henry Charles died aged 14 years 3 months on the 26th September 1879 after receiving a blow to the head in a schoolboy fight. He was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th September.
The 1881 census records Elizabeth as a Retired Miller living in Shaw Crescent.
Elizabeth suffered the loss of another child the following year. Rhoda Elizabeth died aged 19 on the 28th March 1882 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd April.
Elizabeth’s son Walter died aged 22 on the 7th March 1884 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th March.
The 1891 census records Elizabeth living in Cheap Street, working as a Needlewoman her daughter Kate was also recorded living with her.
Elizabeth died aged 70 on the 5th December 1894 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th December.
