George Abraham

1859-1925

George Abraham(s) was born in Newbury in 1859 the illegitimate son of Maria Abraham who was born c1835 in Newbury the daughter of Isaac & Keziah Abraham (nee Pope).

In 1861 George (1) was recorded living with his grandparents Isaac (a Blacksmith) and Keziah in Garland’s Yard St Mary Hill Newbury. His mother Maria (25) was recorded as a House Servant at 73 Northbrook Street Newbury.

Maria married William Arnould in 1866 (marriage registered in KIngsclere)

In the 1871 census George was recorded as George Arnold (11) living at 13 St John’s Street St Giles Reading with his mum Maria Arnold (36) and step-father William Arnold (39), a Bricklayer.

He married (as George Abraham) Esther Clara Cossey on the 23rd June 1880 in Branksome Park, Poole, Dorset

The 1881 census records George (22) as a Baker, living at the “Prince of Wales” Kintbury with his wife Esther (22) and his mother Maria Arnold (45). Not long after this census was taken Esther gave birth to their 1st son William George, their 2nd son James arrived in 1888 both boys were born in Kintbury.

In 1891 George (31) was recorded as a Bakery Manager, living with Esther (31) and their sons William (10) and James (2), in the High Street Kintbury.

(George was possibly working for his widowed Aunt, Maria Abraham.  Maria Holmes married James Abraham (George’s uncle) in 1866. James and Maria had a Grocer/Bakery shop in Kintbury in 1881. James died   aged 45 in 1888. In the 1891 census Maria was recorded as a Baker/Grocer on the same page just above George and his family.James and Maria didn’t have any children and Maria died in 1899.  It’s possible that George took over the business after Maria’s death as later census records record George as a Baker and Grocer (Employer) in the High Street Kintbury)

Esther gave birth to their 3rd son, Cecil in 1892. She died aged 41 in 1900 and was buried on the 4th January 1901 at St Mary Kintbury.

The 1901 census records George (41) as a Baker and Grocer (Employer) living in Kintbury with his sons James (12) and Cecil (9). William (20) was recorded in this census as a Seaman (in Greenwich). George remarried later that year (marriage registered in the December quarter 1901 in Kingsclere) his 2nd wife was a widow, Annie Wing (nee Jacobs).

The 1911 census records George and Annie living in the High Street Kintbury. George was again recorded as a Baker and Grocer (Employer)

The Berkshire Electoral Registers 1840-1965 records George, Annie and their son Cecil living in the High Street Kintbury in 1920. By 1925 George and Annie had moved to Newbury.

George died aged 66 on the 26th October 1925 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th October.

Annie died aged 73 on the 22nd July 1930 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th July.
