Elizabeth Middleton

Elizabeth Curtis was born c1835 in Newbury the daughter of Adam & Sarah Curtis (nee Danvers) who were married on the 5th October 1834 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

In 1841 Elizabeth (6) was living in Newbury with her parents Adam (25), an Agricultural Labourer and Sarah (25), her brother George (4) and her sisters Amelia (8) and Mary (2),
The 1851 census records Elizabeth (16) living with her parents and siblings in Mayor Lane Newbury she married the following year.

(William was born c1823 in Brimpton Berkshire the son of John and Charlotte Tucker (nee Bidmead). He married Ann Brown in 1847 and was widowed the following year)
William and Elizabeth had the following ten children but sadly only two survived to adulthood:

The family were living in St Mary’s Hill Newbury and William was working as a Miller in 1871.
The 1881 census records the family living in Greenham Street Newbury and William as a Carman.
William died aged 57 on the 11th February 1882 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17th February.
Elizabeth remarried later the same year her 2nd husband was Richard Middleton, a Gardener. The 1891 census records them living in St Mary’s Hill and the 1901 census records the couple living at 78 Cheap Street.
Richard Middleton died in 1908 in Newbury District Hospital he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9th March.
Elizabeth was recorded as an old age pensioner living at 2 Hillman’s Cottages Stroud Green Newbury in the 1911 census she died aged 74 on the 3rd April 1912 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6th April.
