Jane Hatherton Roche was born in Islington in 1859; she was the eldest daughter of Horace Roche, a clerk at Lambeth County Court, and his wife Elizabeth.

The census for 1881 shows her as living at 33 Brondesbury Villas, Willesden, in the household of Margaret Irvine a schoolmistress. Jane is listed as a Nurse D S, whether she was caring for Miss Irvine’s widowed mother, or her nephews and niece who were living at the address is unknown.

It is not known where or what, Jane was doing during the next twenty years. Definitely before the 1901 census she had come to Newbury and was living with her younger sister Annie, who was the parish nurse. Their address was “Glencoe” 34 Craven Road Newbury, Jane is shown as living on own means.

Jane died suddenly of heart disease on the 26th October 1904 at her home; she was 42 years of age, her sister Annie was in attendance.

Jane was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th October.
