Louisa Turner

c1834-1915

Louisa was born in Clerkenwell Middlesex the daughter of Thomas and Ann Naylor (nee Clements) who were married in Speen in 1821. Thomas was born c1788 in Newbury and Ann was born in Colthrop Thatcham she was baptised on the 9th July 1786 in Thatcham the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Clements.

In 1841 Louisa (7) was living in West Mills Newbury with her parents Thomas (50), a Glazier and Ann (50) and her siblings, Thomas (15), a Carpenter, Sarah (14) and Hannah (9).

The 1851 census records Louisa (16) as a Housemaid in West Mills Newbury the home of Henry Hawe Mason, a Grocer. Louisa’s parents and sister, Sarah were also recorded living in West Mills Newbury.

Louisa’s father died aged 62 in 1851 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st October.

The 1861 census records Louisa’s mother as blind, living in Bartholomew Almshouses with her daughter Sarah (31), a Domestic Servant.

Ann died in 1863 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th January.

Both the 1861 and 1871 census records record Louisa as a Cook in the household of Joseph Staples and his family, in Bartholomew Street Newbury.

Louisa married Thomas Turner in 1874.

Thomas was born in 1841 in Newbury the son of John and Sarah Turner (nee Rawlings) who were married in Newbury in 1838. He was widowed in 1873. (1st wife Mary Adams, married 1863, three daughters, Ellen born c1864, Alice Mary born in 1865 and Charlotte Lucy born in 1871)

In 1881 Louisa (47) was recorded living in the City Newbury with Thomas (39), a Chandler’s Porter, and her step-daughters, Ellen (17), an unemployed Domestic Servant and Charlotte (9) (recorded as  Lucy C).

Her step-daughter daughter Charlotte Lucy died aged 16 years 9 months on the 7th February 1888 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13th February

Her step- daughter Ellen married Frederick Pocock in 1884. They had three children, Mary Jane born 1884, George Thomas born 1886 and Frederick born 1890. Ellen died aged 26 on the 15th July 1890 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th July.

In 1891 Louisa (54) was living in Ernest Cottage 7 York Road Newbury with Thomas (49). Thomas was recorded in the census for this year as an Oilman.

Both the 1901 and 1911 census records also record the couple living in Ernest Cottage. Thomas was recorded as a Market Gardener.

Louisa died aged 81 on the 28th February 1915 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd March

Thomas died aged 75 on the 4th December 1916 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6th December with Louisa. (Also recorded on the memorial inscription are Louisa’s sister, Sarah Naylor and William Panchaud. William was Thomas Turner’s son–in-law, he married Thomas’s daughter Alice Mary in 1893)
