Esther Webb

c1837-1863

Esther was born in Newbury she was the daughter of Henry and Mary Hopson (nee Garland).

Esther’s father:

Henry was born c1813 in Newbury he was the son of William and Jane Hopson (nee Liddard) who were married on the 2nd August 1790 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. William was born c1769 he died in 1814 and was buried on the 2nd February at St Nicolas Newbury. Jane was born c1767 she died in 1843 and was buried on the 7th March at St Nicolas Newbury. In 1815 Henry (2) was recorded living at The Marsh (east side of Northbrook Street) Newbury with his widowed mother Jane (44) and his siblings, John (17), William (15), Elizabeth (13), Sarah (12), Martha (9), Ann (7) and Mary (3).

Esther’s mother:

Mary was born in Newbury she was the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Garland (nee Maslin) who were married on the 20th January 1807 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Benjamin was born c1781 in Newbury he died in 1853 and was buried on the 26th March at St Mary the Virgin Shaw-cum-Donnington. Mary was baptised on the 19th September 1773 in Ramsbury Wiltshire (surname spelt Masline) she was the daughter of Mark and Elizabeth Masline (nee Spanswick), she died in 1855 and was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd November. In 1815 Mary (4) was recorded living in Union Court (west side of Northbrook Street) Newbury with her parents Benjamin (34) occupation: Shoemaker and Mary (34) and her siblings, Sophia (7) and Benjamin (6).

Esther:

Esther’s parents married on the 15th April 1832 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (both were single). They had two daughters Mary Jane born c1833 and Esther born c1837.

The 1841 census records Henry (25) as a Bricklayer, living in Northbrook Street Newbury with his wife Mary (30), a Dressmaker and his daughters, Mary (9) and Esther (5).

The 1851 census records Henry (37) as a Builder employing 32 men, living in Market Place Newbury with Mary (39), Mary Jane (18), occupation, Milliner and Esther (14).

Esther’s mother died aged 40 on the 25th August 1851 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th August

Esther’s father died aged 39 on the 21st May 1852 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th May.

Esther’s sister Mary Jane married Stewart Nalder Hasell in 1862 they had a son George born in 1856. Mary Jane died aged 26 on the 5th July 1858 she was laid to rest with her parents in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th July.

Esther married Charles Webb in Newbury (marriage registered March Q 1855). Charles was born c1826 in Newbury and was a Grocer later taking over (in partnership with his brother John) the family business J T WEBB & SONS GROCERS trading at 50 Northbrook Street Newbury.

Charles and Esther had the following children (all born in Newbury):

Kate born 1856 (died aged 11 months in 1856)

Charles born 1857 (died aged 6 months in 1857)

Annie born 1858

Henry born c1861

Alfred born c1863 (died aged 4 months in 1863 a month after his mother)

The 1861 census records Charles (34), Esther (25), Annie (2) and Henry (3 months) living at 50 Northbrook Street Newbury

Esther died aged 26 on the 9th March 1863 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16th March.

Charles remarried on the 7th July 1864 in Coity Glamorgan Wales his 2nd wife was a spinster, Eliza Cadman aged 30. Eliza gave birth to a daughter Florence Lizzie in 1865 (birth registered in the December Quarter in Newbury) and died on the 3rd December she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road cemetery on the 8th December 1865. Her daughter died the following month in Bridgend Wales her body was brought back to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th January 1866.

Charles married again on the 12th March 1867 in Trowbridge Wiltshire his 3rd wife was a spinster, Mary Eliza Moore.

The 1871 and 1881 census records Charles & Mary living at 50 Northbrook Street.  By 1891 Charles had retired and the couple were living at 6 Donnington Square Newbury. The 1901 census records them living at 12 Craven Street Newbury.

Charles died aged 84 on the 24th March 1910 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th March.

Mary Eliza died aged 84 on the 27th February 1921 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the2nd March.
