Thomas Few

c1833-1879

 

Thomas was born in Kintbury he was baptised on the 1st September 1833 in Kintbury Berkshire and was the son of George and Harriet Few (nee Cripps) who were married on the 27th January 1825 in Kintbury Berkshire. George was born c1782 and was a Maltster, Harriet was born c1793 in Kintbury.

George and Harriet also had the following children (all baptised in Kintbury except Henry):

Matilda baptised 6th March 1827 (died 1833 buried on the 14th March at St Mary’s Kintbury)

Harriet baptised 8th February 1839

Lavinia baptised 24th October 1830

Henry born c1836 in Newbury

 

George died aged 57 in 1839 he was buried on the 1st November at St Nicolas Newbury.

The 1841 census records Thomas (7), living in Bartholomew Street Newbury with his mother Harriet (40), a Charwoman, and his siblings, Harriet (12), Lavinia (10), and Henry (5).

The 1851 census records the family living in Dibley’s Yard Newbury, Harriet (58), was recorded as a Charwoman, Harriet (22), was recorded as a Dressmaker, Lavinia (20), was recorded as a Housemaid, Thomas (18), was recorded as an Agricultural Labourer and Henry (15), was recorded as an Errand Boy.

The 1861 census records Thomas’s mother Harriet (67), as a Housekeeper, living in Bartholomew Street, his brother Henry (25), recorded as a Shoemaker, was also living with her. Thomas (surname recorded as Fewe)(24), was recorded as a Miler Journeyman, lodging in Back Lane Newbury.

Harriet died aged 77 in 1870 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th September.

Thomas married Maria Stone (born 1848 in Newbury) in Newbury in 1870, they had the following children:

Thomas born 1871 in Newbury

Alice 1874 born in Thatcham

Kate 1875 born in Thatcham

Frederick Henry 17th November 1879 in Newbury (born 2 days after his father’s burial)

The 1871 census records Thomas (37), as a Miller Journeyman and Maria (22), a Seamstress, living in Witherill’s Buildings Newbury.

Thomas died aged 44 in 1879 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th November.

Maria, a Needlewoman and her children were recorded in the 1881 census living in Bartholomew Street Newbury.

 The 1891 census records Maria as a Laundress living in Pound Street, Newbury, only her sons Thomas and Frederick were recorded living with her.

In both the 1901 and 1911 census records Maria was recorded as a Housekeeper.  In 1901 she was living at 15 Craven Street Newbury and in 1911 she was living at 74 St Julian’s Farm Road Lambeth Surrey.

She died aged 82 in 1930 in Worcestershire.
