Edward Batt

1846-1929

Edward was born in Combe Hampshire (now Berkshire) he was the second of seven children born to Joshua and Hannah Batt (nee Pettifer) who married in 1844 (marriage registered in Hungerford). Joshua was born c1821 in Combe (son of William and Jane Batt (nee Criswick) who married in Combe in 1808). and Hannah was born c1818 in Welford/Boxford area of Berkshire.

Edward’s siblings were, William Thomas 1845, Mary Ann 1847 (died aged 10 in 1848), Elizabeth 1848, George 1851, James 1852 and Charles 1857.

The 1851 census records Edward (4) living in Combe with his parents Joshua (30), recorded as an Agricultural Labourer and Hannah (33) and his sisters Mary Ann (3) and Elizabeth (2).

Edward’s father Joshua (37), his sister Elizabeth (9) and his baby brother Charles (0) all died in 1857.(All 3 of these deaths were registered at the same time, December Quarter 1857 Hungerford volume 2c page 147). His sister Mary Ann died aged 10 the following year.

Edward’s mother remarried (as Hannah Maria Batt) in 1858 her 2nd husband was George Annetts (born c1830).

George and Hannah had the following children, Henry c1859, Frederick 1860, Thomas 1861, Eliza 1863 and Alice 1865.

The 1861 census records George Annetts (31) as a Grocer, living in Combe with Hannah (40), George Batt (10), James Batt (8) and Henry Annetts (1). Edward (14) had left home he was living in Carters Cottage Combe and was working as an Agricultural Labourer.

Edward married Ann Chivers (born c1849 in Inkpen) in 1869 (marriage registered in Newbury) they had the following 17 children, Frederick Joshua 1869, Jane 1870, Francis c1872, James 1873, Ann c1875, Eliza 1876, Hannah Maria 1878, Henry 1879 (died aged 18, buried in the NRC on the 23rd November 1897), Albert c1881, Alfred 1882, William 1884, Alice 1885, Mary 1887, Twins: Rose and Emily 1889 (both died aged 1 in 1890, both buried in the NRC, Emily buried on the 25th October and Rose buried on the 3rd November), Ellen 1891 (died 1891 buried in the NRC on the 5th September) and Edward c1893.

The family were recorded living in Newbury, 8 Trafalgar Place (1871), West Fields (1881), Sarum House Shop, (in/near Enborne Road) (1891), West Mills (1901), Club House West Mills (1911) and 22 West Mills (1929).

Edward was recorded as a Grocer’s Porter (1871 and 1891), Brewer’s Labourer (1881), Market Gardener (1901) and Pork Butcher (employer, working from home) (1911)

Ann died aged 78 on the 26th July 1926 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 31st July

Edward died aged 83 on the 21st August 1929 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the same day.
