Charles Appleford was born on the 26th February 1829 he was baptised at the Lower Meeting House (Independent) Newbury on the 31st May 1829 and was the son of Joseph and Jane Appleford (nee Humphries who were married on the 26th May 1828 at St Giles Reading Berkshire.

Jane and Joseph also had another son, Joseph born on the 19th March 1831 and a daughter Anna born in 1832 (both born in Newbury).

Charles father died aged 30 in 1834 he was laid to rest on the 25th November at St Nicolas Newbury. His mother married again on the 11th December 1836 at St Giles Reading, her 2nd husband was Henry Keats.

In 1841 Charles (12) was recorded living in Northbrook Street Newbury with his step-father Henry Keats (30), a Stone Mason, his mother Jane (30), his sister Anna (8) and his half-brother Frederick (2).

In 1851 Charles (22) was working as a Groom in the village of Ruislip in Middlesex.

The 1861 census records Charles (32) as a servant (Boots) at the Crown and Thistle Hotel, Bridge Street Abingdon.

Charles married Elizabeth Abrahams (born c1830 in Barton Oxfordshire) in Newbury in 1862 they had one child, Joseph born in 1864 in Wareham Dorset.

Charles died aged 38 after a lingering illness in 1867. The Reading Mercury dated the 22nd June 1867 records his date of death as the 18th June. (There doesn’t seem to be a burial record in the Newtown Road Cemetery for Charles but he is recorded on the same Memorial Inscription (date of death recorded as the 17th June) as his son Joseph)

The 1871 census records Joseph (6), living at 3 Magdala Terrace Newbury with his grandmother Jane Keats (66), his step-grandfather Henry Keats and their children, Frederick Keats (32) and Elizabeth Keats (29). Joseph’s mother Elizabeth (41) was recorded in this census as a Waitress working at the Crown Hotel, Southampton Hampshire.

Joseph died aged 7years 3 months on the 21st September 1871 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th September.

Joseph’s mother Elizabeth (48) was recorded as a Cook/Domestic Servant, living in Anson Road Islington Middlesex in 1881. She died aged 58 in 1889 in London
