Benjamin Jessett

c1787-1861

Benjamin was born in Eddington Berkshire he was baptised on the 28th August 1787 in Hungerford Berkshire and was the son of Benjamin and Sarah Jessett (nee Beckingham) who were married on the 25th September 1774 in Ramsbury Wiltshire. Benjamin’s father was recorded as a Labourer on the marriage record and his mother Sarah was recorded as being from the parish of Baydon Wiltshire.

Benjamin and Sarah also had the following children (all baptised in Hungerford):

Mary baptised 18/2/1776

Thomas baptised 19/7/1778

William baptised 6/10/1780

Sarah baptised 12/11/1783

John baptised 9/10/1785

Elizabeth baptised 27/6/1790

Jonathan baptised 9/6/1793

Joseph baptised 5/6/1796 died 16/10/1797

James baptised 4/3/1798

Benjamin married Ann Birch on the 13th November 1808 at St Mary the Virgin Speen Newbury (his surname was mistakenly transcribed as Gissett)

Benjamin (50), Labourer, and Ann (60) were recorded living in Speenhamland Newbury in 1841.

 Ann died aged 66 in 1843 she was buried on the 29th November at St Mary the Virgin Speen Berkshire.

The 1851 census records Benjamin (66), as a widower, working as a Porter at the Pelican Hotel Speenhamland Newbury

In the1861 census Benjamin (72), was recorded as B Jessett, widower, Post Boy at Hotel, living in the Newbury Workhouse.

Benjamin died aged 71 in 1861 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th April
