Edward Griffin

c1788-1850

 

Edward was born in Newbury he was the son of John and Charlotte Griffin (nee Skinner) who married on the 4th July 1788 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

Other known children of John and Charlotte were:

Hannah c1801

Jane c1803

Mary Ann c1805

Edward’s father was born c1766 in Newbury he was recorded working as a Labourer in 1815, living on the west side of Newtown Lane Newbury with his wife Charlotte (50) and daughters, Eliza (18), Hannah (14), Jane (12) and Mary Ann (10). The 1841 census records him as a Cloth Maker living at 4 New Almshouses Newbury and the 1851 census records him as an Almsman living in Raymonds Almshouses, in both of these census records his daughter Sarah Powell and her son Thomas Powell (born c1830)  were recorded living with him. John died aged 85 in 1851 in Newbury he was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th May.

Edward’s mother was born c1760 she died aged 68 in 1828 she was buried on the 1st November at St Nicolas Newbury.

Edward married Harriet Hudson on the 14th June 1814 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (both were single.)

The 1815 census of Newbury records Edward (27), as a Bargeman living on the west side of Cheap Street Newbury with Harriet (27), their son John (an infant) and Harriet’s sister Sarah Hudson (30).

The 1841 census records Edward (50), as a Lock Keeper, living in Northbrook Street Newbury with Harriet (50), and their children, Thomas (15), a Tailor’s Apprentice, William (15), a Baker’s Apprentice, Edward (12) and Charles (9).

Edward died aged 62 in 1850 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 5th July.
