George Azor Smith

c1806-1852

 

George was born in Newbury he was the son of George and Elizabeth Smith (nee Watts) who were married on the13th January 1800 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

In 1815 George Ezer (Azor) (9) was living at Hamans Buildings Greenham Lane Newbury with his parents George (40), occupation: Boat Builder and Elizabeth (38) and his siblings George (14), George Israel (12), Maria (7), Thomas (5) and John (1).

George’s mother Elizabeth died (age recorded at death 37) in 1818 she was buried on the 16th May at St Nicolas Newbury., His father died (age recorded at death 57) in 1832 he was buried on the 1st August at St Nicolas Newbury.

George was a Whitesmith he married Susannah Lydford on the 4th July 1825 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (married as Azor Smith). They had at least three children, Azor born 1826, Charles born 1828, and Albert born 1832.

Susannah died aged 30 in 1834 she was buried on the 31st December at St Nicolas Newbury.

George remarried on the 1st October 1836 at St Nicolas Church Newbury his 2nd wife was Drusilla North, they had the following children, George Henry born 1837, Samuel born c1839, Eleanor born 1842, William Azor born 1844, Rebecca born 1846 and Drusilla North born c1850.

The 1841 census records George (35), Drusilla (35), Azor (15), Charles (12), Albert (8), George (3) and Samuel (2) living in Northbrook Street Newbury.

Drusilla died aged 45 in 1850 after giving birth to her daughter Drusilla who also died. (Both deaths were recorded in the march quarter). 

The 1851 census records George (47) and his children Ellen (Eleanor) (8), William (6) and a Housekeeper living in Chapel Yard Northbrook Street.

George died aged 47 on the 22nd September 1852 of pulmonary disease he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th September.
