William Elliott (1834 – 1863)

William Elliott was born circa 1834 in Newbury the son of James and Maria, nee Faithful, Elliott.

He was recorded in the 1841 census with his parents James and Maria along with brothers Edwin aged 15, Henry aged 13, John aged 10, Joseph aged 5 and George aged 2 living in The City in Newbury. Also, in the house were Harriet Spreadbury aged 5 and Edward Spreadbury aged 2. James was recorded as a bricklayer.

Ten years later in the 1851 census William was recorded with his parents James and Maria together with brothers Henry aged 22, Joseph aged 14, George aged 11 and Alfred aged 8 living in Elliotts Cottage in Newbury. James and Henry were recorded as bricklayers, William a tailor, Joseph an errand boy and George & Alfred as scholars.

In the 1861 census William was recorded with his parents James and Maria together with brother Alfred and Sarah Elliott, granddaughter of James and Maria, living in Wash Road in Newbury. James was recorded as bricklayer employing one man, William a bricklayer’s labourer and Joseph a tailor. It appears that the enumerator may have mixed up the details for Alfred and William, the ages were the wrong way round and it seems likely that William was still a tailor and Joseph the bricklayer’s labourer.

William’s mother Maria died March 1862 and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 10 March 1862.

William died December 1863 aged 29 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 5 December 1863.
