James Brown (1808 – 1875)

Eliza Brown (1806 – 1883)

James Brown was born circa 1808 in Greenham. He married Eliza Hopson on 28 February 1830 at All Saints in Burghclere. Eliza was baptized on 28 September 1806 at All Saints in Burghclere daughter of William and Sarah. Eliza had a daughter Sarah Ellen who was baptized on 17 January 1830 in Burghclere.

In the 1841 census James and Eliza with daughter Sarah Ellen were recorded in The City in Newbury with James recorded as a bricklayer. Ten years later in the 1851 census James and Eliza were living in Bartholomew Street with James still a bricklayer.

James and Eliza were living The City in Newbury in the 1861 census with James recorded as a bricklayer employing two men. They were still in The City in the 1871 census with James now recorded as employing eight men as a bricklayer.

James died 29 December 1875 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 1 January 1876. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 30 December 1875 which read:-

BROWN – Dec 29, after a long and painful illness, Mr. James Brown, builder, City, Newbury, aged 67 years.

Eliza was still living in The City in the 1881 census along with her grandson Edwin Elliott aged 16 who was recorded as a builder’s son.

Eliza died 25 January 1883 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 29 January 1883. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 1 February 1883 which read:-

BROWN – Jan 25, at Hampden Road, Newbury, Eliza, widow of the late Mr. James Brown, aged 77 years.

James and Eliza’s daughter Sarah Ellen Elliott was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 1 April 1896.
