Martha Portsmore

c1813-1873

 

Martha was born in Marlborough Wiltshire she was the daughter of James (c1782-1841) and Elizabeth (c1779-1852) Jennings. James was a Fruiterer (as recorded on Martha’s marriage certificate in 1840).The 1841 census records Elizabeth as a Shop Keeper.

Martha married Thomas Jefferies on the 2nd March 1835 at St Mary the Virgin Marlborough, she was widowed the following year. Thomas died aged 22 he was laid to rest on the 11th April 1836 at St Mary’s Marlborough.

Martha remarried on the 11th June 1840 at St Mary’s Marlborough her 2nd husband was William Portsmore  (born c1815 in Hampstead Marshall Berkshire).

William and Martha had the following children:

Anna Maria c1841 (died aged 17 in 1857 buried in the NRC on the 18th December)

Martha 1842

Fanny 1843 (died aged 17 buried in the NRC on the 30th July 1861)

Edwin Jennings 1845

Elizabeth 1846

Emma Caroline 1848

Rosa Sarah 1850

 

William worked as a Plumber, Glazier and Painter.

In 1841 William, Martha and their daughter Anna were living in the village of Kintbury Berkshire.

The 1851 census records William and the eldest six children living in Caroline Place Newbury. Martha and Rosa were recorded in the household of Martha’s sister Hannah (recorded as Anna) at New Road Marlborough, her brother James (27) and her mother Elizabeth (70) were also recorded in the household.

The 1861 census records the family living in Parr’s Yard (off Northbrook Street) Newbury

William died aged 55 in 1868 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th November.

In 1871 Martha was working as a Sempstress, living in Caroline Place Newbury. Edwin (recorded as Edward) and Rosa were both still living at home when this census was taken. Edwin was recorded as a Journeyman Painter and Glazier and Rosa was recorded as a Dressmaker and Milliner.

Martha died aged 63 in 1873 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th February.
