Agnes Butler

1846-1861

Agnes was born in Woodspeen Berkshire she was the daughter of John and Caroline Butler (nee Stillman) who were married on the 3rd January 1836 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. John was a Miller, he was born c1813 in Frilsham Berkshire and Caroline was born c1815 in Newbury.

John and Caroline also had the following children:

Edward c1837

Charles 1838 (died aged 14 months buried 8/1/1840 at St Nicolas Newbury)

George 1841 (died aged 22 in 1864 buried 23rd December at St Mary the Virgin Speen)

Kate 1842 (died aged 5 in 1848)

Alice 1844 (died aged 0 in 1845)

Theresa 1848

Myra 1850

Emma 1852 (died aged 0 in 1853)

In 1841 John (25), Caroline (25), Edward (4) and George (1) were living in Northbrook Street Newbury

The 1851 census records John as a Miller employing 4 men, the family were recorded living in Shaw Road Newbury

Caroline died aged 42 in 1855

John remarried in 1857 his 2nd wife was Ann Bridgeman born c1817 in Faccombe Hampshire

John died aged 45 on the 27th October 1857 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th October

In 1861 Agnes, aged 14, was recorded living in Shaw Road Newbury with her brothers, head of the household, Edward, aged 24, occupation, Miller and George, aged 19, occupation, Baker, her stepmother Ann,  aged 44, occupation,  Housekeeper, (recorded as mother-in-law to head of household) and her sister Theresa aged 12

Agnes died aged 15 in 1861 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9th December
