Israel Curtis

c1830-1862

Israel was born c1830 in Newbury he was the son of Adam & Hannah Curtis (nee Moore) who were married in Thatcham on 21st November 1810. Adam was born c1789 in Winterbourne and Hannah was born c1792 in Shaw.

Other known children of Adam & Hannah were:

Adam c1813 Isaac c1835

In the 1841 census Israel (10) was recorded living in Back Lane Newbury with his parents and his brother Isaac (6).

Israel married Ann Hussey in Kingsclere in 1851 and they had the following children:

Alfred born in Newbury in 1849 (before they married, the birth was registered as Alfred Curtis (MMN Hussey).

Matilda 1853 (died aged 2 in 1856 buried in the NRC on the 9th May)

Edward 1857

Charles 1859

William Henry 1861

It’s possible that they also had a daughter Caroline born c1851 as the 1861 census records this child although there does not seem to be a birth registration for her.

In 1851 Israel was working as a Blacksmith and Ann, Alfred and Israel were living with Israel’s parents and his brother Isaac in Back Lane.

In 1861 the family were living in Eyles Yard Bartholomew Street and Israel was working as a Marine Store Dealer.

Israel died aged 32 in 1862 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 5th May.

His widow Ann died aged 36 in 1865 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11th November.
