Miss East, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.H. East of the Bridge, Newbury, died on November 13th. The remains were cremated at Golder's Green on November 17th.

On November 24th the casket containing the ashes was brought to Newbury by her sister and brother-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gardiner Leader and a service was held at the old cemetery, Newtown-road, when the casket was interred in her mother's grave,

The following appreciation appeared in the “Harrow Observer and Gazette,” of November 22nd:

“There has passed from our midst this week a well-known figure in South Harrow, Miss May East (affectionately known as Eastie by her colleagues) for 21 years on the staff at Eastcote-Lane (now Roxeth Manor Infants' School.) Never too busy to help a child in difficulties, to have a smile and a kind word for a parent, to give of her wider experience to a new young teacher, or an older one, who generously returned to give help when the school needed it, she was loved by all. To be remembered, respected and above all by two decades of children, and their parents is no small thing, and will she not stand in the forefront of those to whom it is said “In as much.”
