JOHN RIDGEBY WITTS

Appointed a postmaster

Mr. John Ridgeby Witts, only son of Councillor and Mrs. J.R. Witts, of 53 York-road, Newbury, has been appointed postmaster of Erith, Kent.

He was educated at the Boys' Lancastrian School, under the late Mr. J.C. Slight, and afterwards at Newbury Council School. Mr. Witts, who is 43 years of age, entered the postal service at Newbury as a telegraph boy at the age of 14½, he was then a clerk at Marlborough, later going to Hayes, Middlesex, where he has been supervisor for six or seven years. During the Great War, Mr. Witts served as a wireless telegraphist on a minesweeper.

 

His father, Councillor Witts,completed over 45 years in the Post Office service, retiring in 1932 when inspector of postmen.
